Citizen Climate Counsel, 2022 Climate Progress Account

What has the City of Ottawa’s progress been on its climate action goals? A member of  CAFES’ network, Citizen Climate Counsel (C3), is launching a 2022 Climate Progress Account report that answers this question.

C3 diligently tracked all of the City of Ottawa’s 159 milestones outlined in their various climate plans: Climate Change Master Plan, Energy Evolution and other city documents. C3 then reviewed city council and committee meeting minutes, staff reports and more to track the city’s progress on these milestones.

The result? The city of Ottawa is not on track to achieve its climate targets.

The report provides an overview of the city’s major climate documents, identifies the highest emitting sectors in the city, and reviews progress made on milestones in these sectors. The report also discusses some key questions: Will Ottawa be resilient to the changing climate? Are we spending funds wisely on climate programs? Have we invested enough to succeed? And is the city leadership in place to build effective partnerships? The report finally provides suggestions to get the city of Ottawa on track in achieving its climate targets, to create a healthy and resilient city in the face of climate change.
