Community Clean-up and Climate Dialogue

CAFES was delighted to join our member organization Smart Youth Network and the Peace and Environment Resource Centre (PERC) for a community clean-up and dialogue initiative about climate action.

On June 21st and June 28th, PERC and Smart Youth Network organized clean-ups of the area surrounding the Albion-Heatherington Recreation Centre in Ottawa South. Before the clean-ups, CAFES, Smart Youth Network, and Reuse Ottawa gave presentations to participants about our various climate initiatives.

CAFES started off with a presentation about municipal climate advocacy, explaining how City Council works and how Ottawans can get involved in local climate action. We then tested participants' knowledge of recycling with a game of Jeopardy! Smart Youth Network followed with a presentation about budget advocacy, emphasizing the importance of getting Black and First Nations youth involved in budget decision-making. Finally, Reuse Ottawa spoke about their pilot program providing reusable containers to restaurants and grocery stores.

It was great to meet everyone who attended, including Ottawa South MPP John Fraser. Thank you to PERC and Smart Youth Network for putting this event together!
