Action: Rally to support Bay du Nord project legal challenge
Action: Rally to support Bay du Nord project legal challenge
- When:
- 8:30 am to 9:30 am
- Where:
- 90 Sparks St., Ottawa, ON K1P 5A5, Canada
- Description:
-
What: A rally in support of a legal challenge against the approval of the Bay du Nord deepwater offshore oil project.
When: Wednesday, March 1, 8:30-9:30 AM ET
Where: Ottawa Federal Court, 90 Sparks St, moving to the Norwegian Embassy at 150 Metcalfe St.
We know that the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 is unachievable if we continue to approve and develop new oil and gas projects.
Despite this evidence, Canada’s Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault approved the Bay du Nord project last April. This NEW deepwater offshore oil project off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. is expected to produce 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day and potentially more than 1 billion barrels in total.
In response, Sierra Club Canada, Équiterre, and Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Inc. (MTI) – an organization representing several Mi’gmaq communities in New Brunswick – are suing the federal government over the Bay du Nord approval. Ecojustice is representing the groups, who are backed by a broad coalition of Indigenous allies and environmental and social justice groups, including the Council of Canadians.

And WE need your support!
The hearing was originally scheduled to be heard in Halifax early in February. It has since been rescheduled and moved to Ottawa! This means that concerned residents of the Atlantic provinces cannot be present to show our support for the challenge in the courtroom, and we can’t attend the rally being held on March 1.
That's where you come in!
Join us outside the Federal Courthouse on Wednesday March 1, to say no to the Bay du Nord project and share the event with your friends and family! We need to make clear to government that no further oil and gas projects - Bay du Nord included - can be developed if we are to meet local, national, and global climate targets.
For more information about the challenge, you can go here, with an update here.
Let’s send a strong message to our federal elected representatives on March 1 that we won’t stand for any new oil and gas projects or violations of Indigenous rights and treaties. Let’s show them that we are united in solidarity because we know we are stronger together.

Building owners and occupiers are under pressure to accelerate decarbonization and realize savings & efficiency gains while minimizing emissions.
Benchmarking identifies opportunities you can seize to improve your building's energy performance. But what about decarbonization?
Using data to evaluate what is working and what isn't is a precious management practice. Ultimately our collective goal is to uncover ways to achieve operational savings and reduce emissions.
ENERGY AND WATER REPORTING AND BENCHMARKING (EWRB) for buildings over 50,000 square feet is required. But how far beyond will we need to go to meet our net zero goals?

WORLD WATER DAY!
WORLD WATER DAY!
- When:
- 12:00 am to 11:59 pm
- Description:
-
Celebrate World Water Day!
From the City of Ottawa:
The challenges that face our water systems are an often forgotten, but critical part of addressing the effects of climate change. That’s why Wednesday March 22nd is World Water Day, a United Nations led event to bring attention to these issues and to identify ways that governments, businesses, and individuals can work together to protect our watersheds.
This Wednesday, the Rain Ready team encourages you to take action and identify ways that you can help your city and neighbourhood protect the Ottawa River and its watershed from harmful runoff, prevent flooding, and better use water resources.
Redirect your downspout or plant a raingarden to reduce the risk of flooding on your property and in your neighbourhood, taking advantage of natural solutions along the way! Rain Ready Ottawa is here to help you with educational resources and rebates. Learn more about the Ottawa River watershed and how the City of Ottawa manages drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater. Engage with World Water Day online and on social media to learn more about what you can do to raise awareness and make a difference. Check out the UN’s Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving Water to get tips on the actions you can take.

Join Climate Justice uOttawa for a protest against Bill-23! March 22nd 2023 2-3pm outside City Hall.
Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/221076507112839 Premier Doug Ford has promised over and over again to protect the Greenbelt, but late on a Friday afternoon, in the middle of a labour crisis, his government quietly dropped a plan to remove 7,400 acres of land from the Ontario Greenbelt. As of December 14th, the province has officially removed these lands from the protection of the Greenbelt and Oak Ridges Moraine legislation. These new attacks on our Greenbelt came hot on the heels of Bill 23 - which strips environmental protections to make it easier to build costly car-dependent sprawl. Bill 23, and associated policy changes, will: - Create a process for selling off conservation lands without oversight - Strip conservation authority powers which protect us from floods - Remove protections from woodlands, wetlands and wildlife habitat - Do almost nothing to build more affordable homes inside of our cities and towns where they are needed

On and around March 29, 2023, we hope you’ll join us to #MakeClimateAClass! This means devoting your regular class time, in part or fully, to a discussion of how your field contributes to the understanding of climate change, climate solutions or climate justice. There are multiple resources available (in various languages) to help you develop an inventive and engaging class that connects climate change with any course or discipline in the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities. Any single one of the teach-ins and any style count!
If you are interested in participating, please, let us know by including your name and university on the form below. On March 23rd, we will be hosting a special virtual Noons for Now, (our weekly Teach-In series) to prepare for the wave of Teach-Ins. On March 30th, we will host another special virtual teach-in to discuss and debrief about how the experience went.
