Project Payback: Financial benefits of a microgrid as part of a virtual power plant
Project Payback: Financial benefits of a microgrid as part of a virtual power plant
- When:
- 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm
- Description:
-
Speaker: Dr. Art Hunter
Summary: Home rooftop solar panels and home batteries provide a microgrid owner with energy independence from grid failures. Recently the Ontario Energy board approved Ultra-Low Overnight electricity rates as when utilized they financially benefit the microgrid owner, grid managers and all grid customers. Payback to the homeowner of the invested capital is demonstrated as being rapid with a side benefit of energy credit savings reducing year-round billings from the utility. Save monthly operational money, buy-back investment dollars, and reduce your home carbon footprint simultaneously.

Evictions for renovations are often unnecessary or simply cosmetic so the landlord can jack up the rent. That’s why ACORN is having a huge protest to demand Ottawa city councillors protect tenants by passing a renoviction bylaw.

Climate Fresk Workshop
- When:
- 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
- Where:
- Dovercourt Recreation Centre, 411 Dovercourt Ave, Ottawa, ON K2A 0S9, Canada
- Description:
-
The first two general-public Climate Fresk workshops of the Fall season have been scheduled @ Dovercourt.
You can choose from: Thursday Sept 19 or Wednesday Oct 02. The workshops run from 5:30 to 8:30 PM and are for ages 17+
While more detailed information, including registration, is available at:
http://www.dovercourt.org/community/events-at-dovercourt/
here's a quick summary:
You can’t fix what you don’t understand.
As humanity is faced with unprecedented challenges, “Climate Fresk” is a citizens’ workshop that aims to raise awareness and understanding about climate change, and therefore to encourage positive actions at the personal and collective level.
Conceived in France and based on the science of the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the workshop lets participants first engage in the discovery of the causes and consequences of climate change and then engage in a creative group discussion of the actions one might take to combat climate change. It gives the opportunity to learn a lot in a short period of time and is meant for both novices and experts. While relatively new to Ottawa, Climate Fresk workshops have been tremendously successful globally. More than 1.+ million people worldwide have participated in the workshop, and 80,000+ have gone on to become trained facilitators. Fresk workshops have been run in over 162 countries in 45 languages.
In just 3-hours, the workshop calls on participants’ collective and creative intelligence to identify the cause-effect relationships between different components of climate change. This is done so through the placing and organizing of 42 Fresk cards on the table. The Fresk is revealed once all 42 cards have been positioned. The workshop then ends with a substantive and engaging group exploration of the suite of actions that can be taken to combat climate change.
To maximize individual opportunities for engagement, each table will be limited to a maximum of 7 participants and will be assigned a dedicated facilitator.

Saturday, September 21
10 am – 12 pm
210 Hopewell Avenue - Brewer Park (Meet at the east end of Brewer Parking Lot - South)
Brewer Pond has an eventful history. It started as islands. The spaces between were filled to create a swimming area in the early 60s, only to be abandoned soon after because of river pollution. Residents of Old Ottawa South have been working since the 1990s to restore it to a natural area. In 2015, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority opened the pond to the river, enhanced it as fish habitat and planted the surroundings with hundreds of wildflowers, trees, and shrubs. Currently, the Enviro Crew of Old Ottawa South works to control invasive species, such as Wild Parsnip and DSV.
At this walk, the Wild Pollinator Partners will share knowledge about invasive plants and how they’re controlling them, and they’ll also talk about collecting seeds to grow your own wildflowers.
