As a longstanding international holiday, May Day is a day to celebrate the collective power of all who labor – paid and unpaid, formal and informal, in care work and field work – all of the activities that sustain us and our community. It’s a day to recommit to forging solidarity across borders against exploitation and dispossession. Above all, May Day honours the power of ordinary people, working together, to shape the conditions of our lives.
Things are getting harder. People are struggling to get by, the rich are getting richer, the ecological crisis is intensifying, Palestine is enduring unspeakable horrors, authoritarianism is growing more ascendant globally, and ruling officials are offering us little more than flag-waving and immigrant-blaming. In these circumstances, it’s all the more crucial to remember that collective struggle from below is a source of joy and the way that we win.

Description:
Crossing Boundaries Symposium: Mobilizing STEAM to Tackle Climate Change, May 3 - 4, 2025, Ottawa
"We currently possess more data and knowledge about the natural world than ever. Yet, our natural world is going through its worst crises: we are facing the sixth mass extinction, rapid biodiversity loss, all compounded by the climate emergency. Decades of research have shown that changes in knowledge are rarely matched by corresponding changes in behaviour. It is time to change the conversation, cross boundaries, blur lines, and redefine what’s possible! Together, we’ll explore how multidisciplinary approaches combined with the intrinsic value of the natural world, and nature-based solutions can deepen public engagement and inspire meaningful change. Bring your voice to this urgent conversation by speaking at or joining the Crossing Boundaries Symposium!"

Description:
The City of Ottawa is holding a Transportation Master Plan Public Consultation next week.
Ottawa has grown into a city of one million residents. Over the next 25 years, that number is expected to grow to more than 1.4 million. With that kind of growth, we need to revisit how people, vehicles and goods move through our city.
As we update the Transportation Master Plan, we have important decisions to make as individuals and as a city. This plan will determine the transit, road and active transportation projects that will be prioritized over the next few decades. These choices will impact how you move around the city. We need to have thoughtful discussions to ensure Ottawa’s transportation system allows us to become one of the most livable mid-sized cities in North America. Tell us what’s important to you and how our transportation system can move us in the right direction for decades to come.
Virtual sessions will also include a presentation followed by a question-and-answer period. The same information will be presented at all sessions, but discussions at each session may focus on projects specific to the local geographic area. The in-person meeting on April 17th is focused on Ottawa's south quadrant. Residents are welcome to attend any of the sessions, regardless of your place of residence. The City has also published a schedule of all in-person and virtual meetings.
For more information on the Transportation Master Plan, including lists of prioritized transit, road and active transportation project, please visit the Engage Ottawa website.

Harmony Circle for Palestine With Albert Dumont, algonquin Spiritual Advisor and Elder With Moriel Rothman-Zecher, Author of "Sadness is a White Bird"
We have been watching a genocide livestreamed on our phone for a year and a half now and despite so much of the world calling for it to end, it just keeps going. And those who speak out against it, who ask that they stop bombing children in tents, are called anti-Semitic. And some of our Jewish friends and neighbours feel that we are asking for their death if we speak up in support of Palestine. And none of it makes any sense to me. It all makes my heart hurt so much. And I feel like I am not doing enough. But one small thing I can do is help run these Harmony Circles that provide a safe, supportive environment for listening and learning and opening our hearts - and invite others to come and join us.
For this Harmony Circle, Albert will be in conversation with Moriel Rothman-Zecher. Moriel joined our Harmony Circle in May 2024 and his conversation with Albert affected me profoundly. His book, "Sadness is a White Bird", is one of my favourite books ever - and is the reason that I cold called him a year ago to ask if he would join us in circle - never imagining he would say yes!
His book tells a heart-breakingly beautiful story of a young man who is preparing to serve in the Israeli army while also trying to reconcile his close relationship to two Palestinian siblings with his deeply ingrained loyalties to family and country. This story follows somewhat closely to Moriel's own life experiences.
Join us on Wednesday May 7th at 7:00 pm for a webinar hosted by Environmental Defence to learn all about Doug Ford's Bill 5.
Just before the Easter weekend Doug Ford introduced Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing the Economy Act. This legislation would allow anyone that the premier or the cabinet chooses to evade a huge range of provincial and municipal laws. It would repeal the Endangered Species Act and empower the premier to kneecap wind and solar development.
Bill 5 is an unprecedented attack on Ontario's endangered species protections and even the rule of law itself. This one hour webinar will review key aspects of the bill and include a Q&A.
Speakers will be: -Justina Ray, President and Senior Scientist, Wildlife Conservation Society Canada -Laura Bowman, Staff Lawyer, Ecojustice -Anaïs Bussières McNicoll, Director, Fundamental Freedoms Program at Canadian Civil Liberties Association

Throw it away? No way! Fix it at the Repair Café!
Repair Cafés are an international concept that has come to the National Capital Region with the goal of reducing landfill waste, teaching new skills, and building community!
Our past Repair Cafés have been very successful with volunteers fixing dozens of items and sharing their knowledge around everything from darning socks to re-wiring kettles.
Join us on Saturday, May 10th, 2025 at the RA Centre 10am until 2pm. It is a great day to come out and learn more about the circular economy, why it matters, and how it can help you save money and our planet.
This event is held in collaboration with the the City of Ottawa and is free of charge.
No need to register via Eventbrite, but a donation to support these great initiatives is always appreciated and helps cover expenses for volunteers.

Climate Justice Demonstration: No Faith in Fossil Fuels
Climate Justice Demonstration: No Faith in Fossil Fuels
When:
11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Where:
Parliament Hill, Wellington St, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A9, Canada
Description:
Join us on Monday, May 12th from 11:30am to 1pm for a fun, family-friendly rally for climate justice on Parliament Hill! The demonstration is the culminating point of the two-day bike Pilgrimage for the Planet coming from Montreal to demand Canada sign onto the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT) – to end expansion of all fossil fuel projects. This call is supported by countless scientists, organizations, governments and municipalities – including the City of Ottawa! Meet the pilgrims and join in on their call to the federal government to take urgent climate action! Just two weeks after the federal election, it’s up to us to set the agenda on ambitious climate action from the next government!
You are also invited to the Poster Making Party, Saint Paul University Atrium, Thurs. May 8th – Drop in between 3 to 7:30 pm.
The Pilgrimage for the Planet is an ecumenical initiative spearheaded by theClimate Justice Committee of theEastern Synod of theELCIC, the mainline Lutheran church in Canada. Our aim is to “let justice roll” for all God’s Creation (Amos 5:24)! By completing a two day bike pilgrimage without the use of fossil fuels, we hope to make a faithful, impactful, and unique push for a fossil fuel-free future, one that will generate awareness, political attention, and media discourse around the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. It will also provide an opportunity for people of faith to connect with each other, Creation, and God.
THE PLAN: Pilgrims will be completing the 194-kilometre trek from Montreal to Ottawa by bike over the course of two days. Most of the journey can be completed on thePrescott-Russell Recreational Trail. We will be sleeping in churches along the way (bringing along our own sleeping mats and bags), and the pilgrimage will culminate in a peaceful demonstration in downtown Ottawa calling on the federal government to sign onto and implement theFossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. We are also hoping to set up "solidarity pilgrimages" in communities across the country!
WHAT DO WE WANT: Our goal is to raise public awareness and political pressure around the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. While the Paris agreement never mentions oil, coal, or gas, the Fossil Fuel Treaty make explicit the link between fossil fuels and the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, and provides a framework for putting a moratorium on new fossil fuel projects, winding down existing production, and doing so in a manner that is equitable, leaving no community behind. Having already been endorsed by countless scientists, Nobel laureates, civil society organisations, municipalities, and churches, the Fossil Fuel Treaty is an essential piece of international policy to safeguard God’s Creation and everyone living in it, especially as our planet teeters at the edge of the critical 1.5 degree mark set in the Paris Agreement.
WHEN: The Pilgrimage for the Planet will take place over the weekend of May 10-11th, with the demonstration in Ottawa taking place on May 12th.

Description:
Save the Date: State of Capital Ward & 2026 City Budget Discussion
On Wednesday May 21, we’ll be hosting the State of Capital Ward, including a 2026 City Budget Discussion. This will be a chance for residents in the ward to gather—virtually and in-person—to review what we’ve accomplished together in Capital Ward, the work ahead and a look forward to what we want to see for the ward and the city.
The budget discussion will give residents a chance to provide meaningful input into the city budget well in advance. City staff will be on hand to discuss the budget process and listen to residents’ feedback.
After years of calling for improvements to the city budget consultation process, we are proud to have put forward a successful motion in 2025. As a result of the directions in the motion, city consultations on the budget can be held earlier in the year—in spring as opposed to fall. This improved timeline allows for more meaningful resident engagement, with more time in the process for city staff to reflect residents’ requests in the budget.
So join us in person or online on May 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm to discuss the state of Capital Ward, and to have your priorities heard as part of the Budget 2026.

If it’s corrosive, flammable or poisonous it’s hazardous waste. These types of products contaminate water and landfills and should never be poured down the drain or put out with your regular garbage.
Household hazardous waste materials include:

All light bulbs and tubes, no string lights
Disinfectants
Fertilizers and pesticides

Tips to reduce household hazardous waste
Use a non-hazardous alternative
Environmentally friendly and safer alternatives are available for household cleaning, home improvement and garden care
Be a wise consumer
If you must purchase a hazardous product, buy only the amount you can use up. Avoid larger quantity, bulk purchases if you don’t need a lot.
Read labels
Ensure that the product you purchase does what you want it to do before you purchase it. Once purchased, follow the instructions on the label for safe use, ventilation and storage.
Give leftover hazardous products to someone who can use them
Relatives, friends, neighbours, community groups and charitable organizations may be able to use some of what you no longer need.
Avoid aerosols whenever possible
Much of the aerosol product ends up in the air. Purchase safer alternatives. Empty aerosol cans with an explosive hazard symbol only can be disposed of in your blue bin. All other aerosol cans are hazardous waste.
Thank you for your efforts!

Budget background
Every year, the City of Ottawa produces a municipal budget. One of the City’s most important documents, the budget is the blueprint that defines how money is received (revenue) and spent (expenses). There are two main components to the draft budget:
The operating budget funds City programs and services that residents rely on every day
The capital budget helps grow our city by paying for new infrastructure and assets under the City’s control and the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure and assets
The draft budget is broken down by Standing Committee, department and service area as described in the Table of City Services and Standing Committee reporting structure. With direction from City Council, the budget is drafted and tabled for review by each Committee and adopted by Council. There are three Boards who make independent recommendations to Council regarding their draft budgets:
Ottawa Police Services Board
Ottawa Board of Health
Ottawa Public Library Board
Draft Budget 2026 will support Council’s commitment to fund ongoing operational needs and make investments that support an affordable, connected, prosperous and resilient city for all.

The Indigenous Walking Tours (IWT) will explore Ottawa downtown monuments, art, architecture and landscape through an Indigenous perspective. These exceptional tours present a unique opportunity to learn the impact and presence of Indigenous People’s history in our city.
The IWT leader, artist and educator Jaime Morse has been organizing these knowledge sharing events since 2014. Jaime is a proud Metis originally from Lac la Biche, a Buffalo Lake Metis settlement in Alberta. She has a background in Canadian studies and art. Over the years, she's proudly led tours at the National Gallery for First Nations youth, sharing Indigenous stories with the next generation. Jaime and her partner, Réjean Demers provide a comfortable space for the community to enjoy the tour and can deliver the information in both English and French (AM tours). They have included thoughtful considerations to make the tour accessible for People with disabilities, the youth, older adults and newcomers to the city. The tours will be held on every other Saturday from May through October, with book themed tours on indicated days. Please select which day you are attending the tour. The walking tours are approximately 90 minutes in duration and are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Interpretation occurs during stops in a mixed indoor / outdoor environment and park areas. We begin in a relatively quiet space indoors at City Hall (Elgin entrance) – 110 Laurier Ave W. Once we go outside on to Elgin Street, it can sometimes be noisy with sirens or people. There will be places for shelter and opportunities to take breaks, use the washrooms and sit down. Pets are also welcome. Please invite your family and friends to come and learn to appreciate our city through an Indigenous perspective. Registration will close 2 hours before each tour starts. There is a minimum of 5 participants per tour. If you need assistance before the tour, please contact Jaime at 613 290 8597 You can find the IWT on social media at @IndigenousWalks Instagram & Indigenous Walking Tours Facebook! The City of Ottawa does not collect electronic waste (e-waste) as part of its curbside garbage collection. Much of this waste consists of steel, glass, copper, aluminum, plastics and precious metals that can be recycled and reused.
Drop these items off at participating retailers. Find out where you can return your electronics, by using the Waste Explorer, or you can bring your electronic waste to Trail Road Landfill at no charge.
