On November 9th, CAFES, the Mechanicsville Community Association and M.P. Yasir Naqvi had a fantastic day of tree planting with volunteers near Tunney's Pasture! We had an excellent turn out for this event, with about 40 community members coming out throughout the day to plant 31 trees in total, in the field between Kichi Zibi Mikan and Goldenrod Driveway. All trees were native species that will grow to be beautiful canopy trees, including Red Oak, Sugar Maple, Hackberry, Chestnut, Yellow Birch, Tamarack and White Cedar.
This tree planting was organized as part of our 2024 Mother's Day tree planting initiative to increase trees in canopy-deprived neighbourhoods. Over Mother's Day weekend in May, we held a free tree give-away to provide saplings to families and residents living in and around the Mechanicsville and Dalhousie neighbourhoods to increase backyard tree planting. The public planting at Tunney's Pasture was then planned as a subsequent component to the project to increase trees in the public realm, and provide an opportunity for families and individuals who may not have a backyard to plant a tree.
A huge thank you to the National Capital Commission (NCC) for working with us to secure a planting site for this project as well as future planting endeavours. A very special thank you to M.P. Yasir Naqvi for generously supporting this project, now two years in a row. We also acknowledge the incredible leadership of our partners from both Mechanicsville and Dalhousie Community Associations for making these planting events happen.
