Are you a resident of the Hintonburg neighbourhood? Celebrate spring by planting a tree for Mother Nature on your property!
The Hintonburg Community Association is giving away 50 potted trees and 100 seedlings of native species this spring for planting on private property in Hintonburg, in partnership with CAFES Ottawa and the Hintonburg Community Centre. Trees are FREE and will be distributed on a first-come first served basis and must be planted in Hintonburg. Let’s increase the tree canopy in this neighbourhood!
Step 1: Apply and Choose your Tree – Fill out the application form here
- Trees are to be planted in Hintonburg. Hintonburg is bordered by Scott Street to the North, Holland Avenue to the West, the Queensway to the South, and the O-train line to the East. If you are unsure whether you fall within the borders, please reach out to freespringtree@gmail.com.
- Trees come in 2 gallon pots or bare-root seedlings and are all native species.
- Make your top 3 tree choices (in case inventory is limited)
- One tree per household.
- Quantities are limited.

- Grey Birch (Betula populifolia)
- Maple (Acer rubrum)
- Pussy Willow (Salix discolor)
- Red Oak (Quercus rubra)
- White Oak (Quercus alba)
- Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea)
- White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)
- Yellow Birch (Betula alleghaniensis)
- White Spruce (Picea glauca)
- Pin Cherry (Prunus pensylvanica)
Step 2: Pick Up Your Tree on May 10th
- Pick up your tree at the Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Wellington Street K1Y 2Y3 on Saturday, May 10th between 10 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Step 3: Commitment to care and partner with HCA
- Planting instructions (available here) will be provided with each tree to ensure proper planting and care practices.
- The HCA will work with you to make sure your tree has the best chance at survival. If you have a question about whether you have enough land to plant a tree and/or what kind of tree would be best for your property, please email freespringtree@gmail.com - the HCA will provide advice from local gardeners, foresters and horticulturalists.
