On Sunday May 3rd, CAFES teamed up with Bird Friendly Ottawa to host a bird walk, as part of the annual Jane’s Walk initiative! We enjoyed a lovely morning stroll at the Adawe Crossing in Overbrook to check out tons of native feathery friends, including several species of early migrating birds. We had the pleasure of seeing Yellow Rumped Warblers, a Great Blue Heron, Spotted Sandpipers, Red Wing Blackbirds, Song and Chipping Sparrows, Downy Woodpeckers, Cardinals, and a Cooper’s Hawk!
A big thank you to Deborah and Emilia from Bird Friendly Ottawa for leading us on such a wonderful walk and providing a ton of knowledge on bird species identification, behaviour and habitat, and even some information on identifying and managing invasive plant species growing along the trail. To make matters even more exciting, Bird Friendly Ottawa was recently successful in achieving certification for the City of Ottawa to be an official ‘Bird Friendly City’!
Thank you as well to Jane’s Walk – an annual festival of walking tours throughout Ottawa that takes place on the first weekend in May. Jane’s Walk is an impressive gathering of local community leaders whose free walks help build community and increase awareness on anything from local landmarks, culture, history, nature and the environment, and more. Last year CAFES hosted an excellent Jane’s Walk on tree identification and urban forests, so we were thrilled to be able to do this again for now two years in a row.
