Green Drinks last Thursday left our hearts and minds full of ideas to carry with us as we aim to work together to build a just and sustainable future for everyone. We were joined by Serena Mendizabal of Sacred Earth Solar, who shared with us what climate justice looks like when done the Haudenosaunee way!
What we learned:
- Sacred Earth promotes healthy relationships with the land and each other by partnering with indigenous communities through climate infrastructure projects, education and training, advocacy and policy, and healing justice
- What does an Indigenous-led Just Transition look like? It upholds Indigenous knowledge(s), rights, and sovereignty; it recognizes that Indigenous lands, waters, and territories are at the core of all of our existence and survival; it acknowledges connections between energy systems and land, water, food systems, housing, health, culture, spirituality, and community wellbeing; and it is rounded in love for the land, care for each other, and hope for future generations.
- Energy conservation and efficiency are vital for a Just Transition and we must also prioritize caring for our food systems, housing, culture, and community.
- Now more than ever, we must prioritize climate solutions that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but that also increase cost affordability, are least invasive to the natural environment, and are Indigenous-led.
P.S. Remember to RSVP for the next Green Drinks coming up on Thursday August 13
