On Saturday June 22nd, CAFES and the Dalhousie Community Association, with support from Mechanicsville Community Association, planted 6 new Chokecherry trees in the planter boxes along the Somerset Street Bridge. This event was part of a Community Tree Planting Initiative led by CAFES to increase tree canopy in neighbourhoods, like Dalhousie, that need it most.
A small group of volunteers met on Saturday morning to plant the new trees, transplant some of the existing lilies and other plants into the other planter boxes, weed, and top up the planter boxes with compost and mulch. The 6 Chokecherry trees are now happily adjusting to their new homes!
The first component of this initiative was our Mother's Day tree sapling give-away back in May, where we handed out 56 free native saplings to local community members for planting on private property. To account for those who do not have access to backyard space, we have a strong commitment to engage in subsequent public tree planting events in equity-deserving neighbourhoods.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers who came out to help green our urban streets, to the DCA for organizing this event, and for the support provided by MPP Joel Harden and MP Yasir Naqvi. It was an excellent morning!
