Over the last four years, federal and provincial governments across the country have given more than a billion dollars to new small (and large) nuclear reactor projects. - Angela Bischoff of Ontario Clean Air Alliance (ON) will discuss the high financial burden of the nuclear industry and alternatives

Join Synapcity and the Assembly of 7 Generations (A7G) for a workshop session examining Climate Allyship on Algonquin Territory. At the event we will discuss several key concerns that are occurring on Algonquin Territory including climate change, sustainability, waste, land use, water protection, clean energy and more.
The event will begin with short presentations from our speakers Shannon Chief, Dara Wawatie-Chabot and words from former Grand Chief of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation, Verna Polson. Shannon Chief is the project coordinator of the Anishinaabe Moose Research Committee, where she fights against climate challenges such as logging and sport hunting. Dara Wawatie-Chabot is an Anishinaabe person working within the clean energy and just transition for Indigenous inclusion. They share knowledge with local communities and advocate for the restitution of decision-making to land-based Indigenous people who carry the knowledge of living in a good way with all of Creation. Verna Polson is the former Grand Chief of the Algonquin Anishinabeg First Nation. Verna is strong willed, strong in spirit, dedicated, and determined. Verna will outline some of the challenges that are facing the Algonquin Nation around climate change and highlight how allyship can help.
Following the presentations, our speakers will be in conversation with Gabrielle Fayant-Lewis, co-founder of Assembly of 7 Generations. There will be time for Q & A during the panel conversation. Following this, we will gather in small breakout groups to discuss various forms of climate allyship on Algonquin Territory.
We are proud to partner on this event with the Assembly of Seven Generations (A7G). A7G is an Indigenous youth led & driven grassroots, non profit organization focused on community support and opportunities for Indigenous youth, based in Unceded Algonquin Territory. They have been actively working as A7G since 2014. They incorporated as a national non profit organization in 2015. Their work continues to expand as their networks and capacity grow with the needs and aspirations of Indigenous youth. Their mission is to co-create a supportive Indigenous youth-led community through a grassroots way of being.
Doors open at 530pm with the proceedings starting at 6pm. This event is taking place in Ottawa, on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial. We recognize the Algonquins as the customary keepers and defenders of the Ottawa River Watershed and its tributaries. We honor their long history of welcoming many Nations to this beautiful territory and uphold and uplift the voice and values of our Host Nation.
*A limited number of complimentary subsidized tickets are available for this event. Should you be able to afford to purchase a ticket, we encourage you to do so so that we may be able to cover the costs of the venue and food. A light grazing menu will be served at the event.
Speaker Bios:
Gabrielle Fayant-Lewis originates from Fishing Lake Metis Settlement, AB. Gabrielle is an award-winning woman for her work in her community, her dedication to supporting young people, and amplifying grassroots efforts. Gabrielle is passionate about cultural resurgence, revitalization and restitution for all Indigenous peoples. She has worked with several Indigenous and non-profit organizations.
Shannon Chief was born and raised to the wolf clan of the Anishinaabe-Algonquin Nation. She lives in western Quebec, on traditional Algonquin territory in and around what is known as La Verendrye Park. In all the work she does she work in defense of Indigenous cultures. She contributes at various levels to the decolonization and the restoration of the sovereignty of her people. She fights ardently against the challenges stemming from extractive development – from logging to sport hunting – and climate change which all have cruel repercussions in her nation. She is project coordinator of the Anishnabe Moose Research Committee.
Dara Wawatie-Chabot is an Anishinaabe person living in the so-called national capital region, working within the clean energy and just transition field for Indigenous inclusion. They are a single parent of two young children and have been working towards obtaining an undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Ottawa since 2014. It was through their studies that they began to understand the complex system of settler-colonialism, resource extraction and globalization, and how these systems continue to impact Indigenous communities across the globe. Although their time is extremely limited due to raising two children alone, they continue to share knowledge with local communities and advocate for the restitution of decision-making to land-based Indigenous people who carry the knowledge of living in a good way with all of Creation.
Verna Polson is the former Grand Chief of the Algonquin Anishinabeg First Nation. Verna is strong willed, strong in spirit, dedicated, and determined. Verna rose to national prominence in 2019 when she staged a multi day hunger strike on Parliament Hill to draw attention to the Algonquin Nation’s right to share on the 100 Wellington Indigenous Space project anno

Locations: Ottawa Baha’i Centre (at 211 McArthur Ave. in Ottawa). This will be a hybrid meeting, both in person at the Baha’i Centre and on Zoom (links below)
Details:
You are warmly invited to an interactive study and discussion of the BIC statement on unity and the environment, “One Planet, One Habitation”, on Friday May 3rd from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Ottawa Baha’i Centre (at 211 McArthur Ave. in Ottawa). This will be a hybrid meeting, both in person at the Baha’i Centre and on Zoom.
“This span of earth is but one homeland and one habitation. It behooveth you to abandon vainglory which causeth alienation and to set your hearts on whatever will ensure harmony” – Baha’u’llah
- The main themes of the OPOH statement will be summarized and shared in a presentation with quotes from the Baha’i Faith, with ample opportunity for discussion and reflection on key points. How can we move toward the vision of a flourishing global civilization in harmony with the natural environment? What actions are inspired by this statement?
- Let's work together to address this important issue facing humanity through the refreshing lens of spiritual values, unity, and hope, to engage in meaningful conversation and action.
All are welcome. Here is a short background about the One Planet, One Habitation statement:
The Baha’i International Community (BIC) released the statement on the environment called “One Planet, One Habitation: A Bahaʼi Perspective on Recasting Humanity’s Relationship With the Natural World" on the occasion of Stockholm+50, a major international environmental meeting of the United Nations that took place in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 2022. The statement was launched at an event the BIC co-hosted at the Swedish Parliament with a number of other civil society organizations, including the Climate Governance Commission and Global Women Leaders: Voices for Change and Inclusion. The statement was relaunched at the UN Climate Change COP27 in Egypt in November 2022.

Date: May 9, 2024
Time: 5:30 - 8:30 pm
Location: 411 Dovercourt Ave
Based on the workshop successes in April, we’ve added two new general public workshops in May at Dovercourt.
You can choose from: Thursday May 09 or Wednesday May 22. The workshops are from 5:30 to 8:30 PM.
Register and learn more here.
Space is limited to a maximum of 14 per night (7 per table) you are advised to register early. The organizers can well guarantee that coming out of the workshop you'll be able to say: I learned something, I had a good time and I'm now spurred on for further action related to climate change.
Bring a friend. Based on the world-wide success of Climate Fresk (over 1.6M have taken a workshop), we think the demand is there for many, many more workshops in Ottawa. Planning is already underway for two additional Dovercourt sessions in June.
If you've any questions, you can contact the organizer via email: donald.sproule@gmail.com
Workshop details:
You can’t fix what you don’t understand.
As humanity is faced with unprecedented challenges, “Climate Fresk” is a citizens’ workshop that aims to raise awareness and understanding about climate change, and therefore to encourage positive actions at the personal and collective level.
Conceived in France and based on the science of the IPCC 6th Assessment Report, it explains the cause and consequences of climate change. It gives the opportunity to learn a lot in a short period of time and is meant for both novices and experts. More than 1.5 million people worldwide have participated in the workshop, and 70,000 have gone on to become facilitators.
In just 3-hours, the workshop calls on participants’ collective and creative intelligence to identify the cause-effect relationships between different components of climate change. As a team, you will be handed five sets of cards. When each new set is handed out you are asked to (re)arrange the cards on the table according to cause and consequence. The Fresk is revealed once all 42 cards are on the table. Team cooperation is very important and will get you from one set of cards to the next. A facilitator will guide and support you through the workshop.
THE STEPS of the WORKSHOP
- the introduction to learn a bit about “Climate Fresk” history and to do some icebreaker exercises
- the construction of the Fresk, guided by your facilitator
- the creative phase, to relax and get to grips with your Fresk, then a debrief on what you’ve learned, and
- finally to share your feelings and express your thoughts and ideas for individual and collective actions

The work invites you to reflect on our connection to nature, and the realization that there is no separation between the parts of life. Some examples, and an open Silent Auction, gives you a taste of what you will see: Old Growth. Proceeds support the work of Just Food and the People's Official Plan.
- Moe Garahan, the Executive Director of Just Food, will give a tour of the farm starting at 2 pm, a chance to see the true scope of this amazing community food space.

Join to learn more about what is next to keep Canada on track to meet its 2030 climate goals.
The oil and gas emissions cap is a key climate policy for Canada. Emissions from oil and gas production are the largest source of pollution in the country. The increase in oil and gas pollution has cancelled out all the recent progress in emissions reduction in other industries. Without the cap, oil and gas emissions will continue growing unchecked, further threatening our health, environment and economy.
The emissions cap regulation has already been delayed repeatedly. We can’t afford further delays in this key policy. So where do we go from here?
Join Aly Hyder Ali, Oil and Gas Program Manager from Environmental Defence, and special guests:
Dr. Joe Vipond, Emergency physician, past president of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and co-founder of Calgary Climate Hub Alex Cool-Fergus, National Policy Manager from Climate Action Network Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Programs Director from Sierra Club Canada
As the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, it’s time for the oil and gas industry to do their fair share to cut emissions instead of leaving the burden on us.
Presented by the Environmental Defence (Canadian environmental advocacy organization that works with government, industry and individuals to defend clean water, a safe climate and healthy communities.)

Climate Fresk Workshop (In Person)
Climate Fresk Workshop (In Person)
- When:
- 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
- Where:
- 411 Dovercourt Ave, Ottawa, ON K2A 0S9, Canada
- Description:
-
Date: May 22, 2024
Time: 5:30 - 8:30 pm

We The Power Film
Imagine upending the traditional energy system and giving the power of clean electricity production back to your neighbours. We the Power follows friends, families and visionaries as they break down legislative barriers and take power back from big energy companies to put in the hands of locals. The film chronicles local cooperatives from deep in Germany’s Black Forest to the streets of ancient Girona in Spain and the urban rooftops of London, England, as they pave the way for a renewable-energy revolution and build healthier, more financially stable communities.
Community Social
Come meet and chat with local community organizations to learn more and find ways to get involved. We will be joined by Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES), Electrify613, EnviroCentre, Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa (EVCO), and the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC).
